... The trail section cost about $50,000 for the trail itself, and about $100,000 including the signs, new tree plantings and other enhancements, said east area parks director Wendy Dadalt.
The trail has been in the planning stages for a long time, but now that the first section is completed, it is hoped there will be a push to get more done, Dadalt said.
The next section will extend north from 8th to 16th Avenue along 200th Street, Dadalt said.
Encircling the 539-hectare park with trails could take more than a few years.
Martin noted that running the trail around the edge of the park means it will cause less disruption to the natural environment. Where there are natural obstacles, the roads may be used as part of the completed trail.
Martin and Alberts tested out part of the trail on Metro Vancouver mountain bikes, pedalling in the rain after the official ribbon cutting.
