Library Named for Muriel Arnason

One of the Township's longest-serving politicians has a permanent legacy.

Muriel Arnason's love of books, and of Langley, were honoured Monday when the Township's newest library was renamed in her honour.

The Willoughby branch of the Fraser Valley Regional Library was renamed the Muriel Arnason Library.

Arnason was a Township councillor for 26 years starting in 1979. After winning 11 straight elections, she retired due to health problems.

Arnason passed away in December last year, at the age of 82.

Several of Arnason's former politician colleagues remembered her legacy at a ceremony before the official unveiling of the library's new name.

"Muriel broke the gender barrier," said Mayor Kurt Alberts. She was Langley's first female councillor.

"Langley was blessed to have such talent for so many years in office," said Patrick Boyle, a retired former Township councillor.

He remembered how Arnason ran for re-election in the 1980s. She realized that the Township was a collection of diverse neighbourhoods, so she identified key people in each neighbourhood and personally wrote them letters.
