Teens Show How to Clean Up Town

Langley Advance - Friday, June 20, 2008

Aldergrove students cleaned up trash and graffiti in their community this month. They went to town - and they cleaned it up.

A group of teenagers teamed up with Langley Township, the RCMP, and Aldergrove Neighbourhood Services to show their community pride by picking up garbage and covering graffiti.

The voluntary clean-up was held on June 10. Nineteen students in Aldergrove Community Secondary's environmental group and Aldergrove Neighbourhood Services after-school program donned gloves, and grabbed garbage bags to help beautify local streets and parks in downtown Aldergrove. They were joined by Township Mayor Kurt Alberts and councillors Howie Vickberg, and Charlie Fox. Fox is a former principal of the students' school.

"The enthusiasm shown by these students was contagious," said Alberts. "It's always nice to see young people who are concerned about the world around them, and are willing to work to make it a better place."

The project was organized by the Aldergrove Community Police Office and Aldergrove Neighbourhood Services Youth workers at ACSS and Shortreed Community Elementary. They knew local students were eager to get involved in an event that would benefit their community and the environment.

The CPO and ANS contacted Fox - who is also a member of the Aldergrove Rotary Club, which has been partnering with the Aldergrove CPO for graffiti paint-overs - as well as Melinda Yong of the Township's Adopt-A-Program.

Adopt-A-Program encourages people to pitch in and clean up local streets, highways, parks, and streams...
