Winslade also said that the gyms conform to FIBA guidelines, meaning they could potentially host the U-19 or U-21 world championships in the next few years.
B.C. was previously slated to host the FIBA U19 world men's championships, but had to give up their date due to a lack of proper facilities. They are expected to get another shot.
The events centre will also get heavy use during the 2010 B.C. Summer Games, holding both the opening and closing ceremonies, plus plenty of sporting events.
The facility will not be limited to sports events, either. Winslade said the events centre will leave open dates to host concerts, exhibitions and trade shows, with any remaining time to be alloted to the various minor sports organizations. Conventions, conferences, parties and weddings will all be able to use the building.
There will also be a fitness centre, retail and office space and a restaurant. Several restaurants have expressed interest in setting up shop in the building, Winslade said.
Altogether, 1,350 parking spots will be on site. And with so much traffic comes the inevitable traffic concerns.
There will be three main entrances: 200 Street, 80 Avenue and 202A Street.
