It will also offers spectators the chance to view the race from start to finish on both sides of the channel, something that most courses cannot offer.

Fraser Valley head coach Liz Chisholm recalled thinking "what a jewel this place was" when she first saw the Bedford Channel in 2001.

Chisholm believes that this course will become a permanent venue for Western Canadians, which after 2008, will become the qualifying event for nationals.

"The water itself is very rarely affected by wind, which is the bane of rowing events," Chisholm said.

She added that Rowing BC has been very supportive, especially as they look for a regional-type training centre.

"The potential is great for growth in the sport, particularly in high school rowing," Chisholm added.

"For a number of years, we have been working hard to increase public access to the waterfront," said Township Mayor Kurt Alberts. "We have come along ways in the past 20 years."

Alberts added that more announcements for the area are expected in the coming weeks. The ultimate goal is to connect Marina Park to Glover Road, and all the way to the Fort-to-Fort Trail, he said.

Langley MP Mark Warawa was pleased that so many groups came together on the project. "It was really refreshing that everyone said 'yes, we can do this,'" he said. "It wouldn't have been possible if everyone didn't participate." ...
