MAP Sports Box Benefits Many

The new facility beside LSS is already being put to good use. A covered sports box that has already served as a playground for ball hockey, lacrosse, and baseball players for a little more than a month was officially opened on Tuesday.

The McLeod Athletic Park (MAP) Sports Box, built by the Township of Langley, is located behind Langley Secondary, just west of MAP.

It boasts a number of additional features, thanks to a financial contribution made possible by the Langley School District. The Township teamed with Langley School District to build the facility.

The sports box has already been enjoyed for lacrosse practices and games, ball hockey practices and games, school-based physical education activities, and pre-season baseball practices.

"We are very proud of this new facility, as it is an investment in the community that will serve a variety of purposes," Township Mayor Kurt Alberts said. "People of all ages, whether they are members of the public or students at Langley Secondary School, will get great use out of this versatile new sports box, which can be used day and night, in all kinds of weather."

Langley School Board Chair Steve Burton said the facility is a great example of the lengthy and positive relationship between the school district and the Township.

"It makes so much sense for us to be working together, when the outcome is excellent facilities like this, facilities that benefit students, families, and the larger community," Burton said.

In 2007, the Township approved a capital budget of $850,000 to provide a roof over the sports box. The roof was identified to provide year round play for expanding minor lacrosse and ball hockey organizations. As well, it would protect the playing and spectator areas from the elements...
