Langley's first two Community Safety Officers (CSOs) have taken to the streets, and their first month on duty has gone well, according to the head of Langley's RCMP detachment.
Supt. Janice Armstrong and the two CSOs, Jeff Christmas and Paul Walker, gave an update on the program at Monday's Township council meeting.
Langley is one of four municipalities in B.C. to try out the CSOs. Unarmed special constables, they are paid employees, unlike auxiliary officers who volunteer similar work.
Armstrong said Langley's CSOs have been mostly based in Aldergrove, working on crime prevention and community outreach, and acting as a presence in the neighbourhood.
"I believe that it's a really good step, a positive step, in improving public safety in the area," said Armstrong."
The local CSOs were part of Canada's first graduating class of CSOs, completing three weeks of training in Chilliwack, on top of the training they already had to become volunteer auxiliaries.
