Events Centre Gets Manager

Matthew Claxton, Langley Advance - Tuesday, July 08, 2008

The former president of the BC Lions and the Vancouver 86ers will be managing Langley Township's new sporting facility in Willoughby.

Glen Ringdal has been named general manager of the Langley Events Centre by the Langley Development Group.

Currently under construction in Willoughby near 200th Street and 80th Avenue, the Events Centre is a major sports facility that will host the Langley Chiefs junior hockey team, the Trinity Western Spartans, the Langley Thunder lacrosse team and the Langley Gymnastics Foundation when it opens next spring.

Ringdal will manage the $56 million project for its partners, which include the Township, the province and its private builders. The Township is paying $16.5 million of construction costs.

For the past seven years, Ringdal has been president and CEO of the New Car Dealers Association of BC, but most of his 30 working years have been spent in sports.

Aside from running the 86ers (now the Whitecaps) and the BC Lions, he was also a vice-president of marketing and communications for the Vancouver Canucks.

Rindal will work from the Township Civic Facility while construction continues on the Events Centre. He will have to co-ordinate the many stakeholders that have signed on to the project already.

Finished, the building will have gyms, an exhibition or banquet centre, a fitness centre and a community police office. It will also have room for more than 5,000 spectators for the main arena.

"Our vision for the Langley Events Centre," Ringdal said, "is a place of pride and activity for the residents of the Township of Langley."
