Those groundwater levels are currently declining due to overuse, and during the summer months, the demand for water doubles. Nearly half of that is due to lawn sprinkling.
"Studies have shown that healthy lawns need only one hour - or one inch - of watering per week, including rainfall," Sloat said.
"Residents who pledge to water their lawns only one hour or one inch per week will have a sign on their lawn, showing they have joined the Challenge."
"Look for those signs on lawns in Walnut Grove, as we make our way through the community and encourage as many people as possible to take the pledge," Tendland-Frenette said.
Residents who would like to conserve water by reducing their water consumption can purchase outdoor water saver kits for $20, at the Walnut Grove Community Centre. The outdoor kit includes tools such as a hose timer and an outdoor watering gauge that will help residents to meet the ONE Water Conservation Challenge goal of one hour - or one inch - of watering once per week. Indoor kits are also available for $15.
"The Township of Langley's groundwater is a valuable resource," Aune said. "Please do your part to conserve our drinking water."
