Local Parks Get New Names

The Aldergrove Star - July 16, 2008

Confusion for park users trying to find too many parks with Aldergrove in their names has been resolved by Langley Township council.

South Aldergrove Park - adjacent to Aldergrove Community Secondary School, at 26850 29 Ave. and Aldergrove Kinsmen Community Centre - has been renamed Aldergrove Athletic Park.

Aldergrove Park, often referred to as Parkside because it is adjacent to Parkside Centennial Elementary School, at 3300 - 270 St., has been renamed Phillip Jackman Park, in honour of one of the early pioneers of Aldergrove.

The park is situated on a portion of Jackman's homestead, which was about 150 acres in that area, said Mayor Kurt Alberts.

Alberts said that council had been requested by sports user groups to "clear up the confusion" because out-of-town sports groups seeking the playing fields of the former South Aldergrove Park often ended up at Aldergrove Lake Park, on 8 Avenue, just east of 272 Street.

Aldergrove Lake Park is about 282 hectares, a Metro Vancouver Regional Park with mixed use horse and pedestrian trails, and Aldergrove Lake, but no playing fields.
