On September 1, 2007 Township Council held a community ceremony with the Smith family to unveil the sign for the Michael J. Smith fields at McLeod Athletic Park. Mayor Kurt Alberts said, “We are here today to honour and remember someone who was an outstanding volunteer in our community. Michael J. Smith left his mark on our community by being a champion for youth through sports, in particular the sport of soccer.”

Michael devoted many years of his life to the local soccer scene. He served the community as Chair of the Labour Day Soccer Tournament and also as president of the Langley United Youth Soccer Association.

After Michael’s passing in 2006, Council adopted a resolution that the re-constructed fields be named after Michael. In April of 2007 the Township also honoured Michael by planting a tree in his memory in the park. Mayor Alberts commented, “This whole athletic complex really depends on people like Michael, volunteers that are committed to developing the strengths of our girls and boys so that they can become good citizens through participation in sports.”

Michael’s wife, Helen, and his brother, David did the official unveiling of the sign with other family members and friends in attendance.
