At the 2006 Douglas Day Banquet, Muriel Arnason was given the “Freedom of the Municipality”. Muriel was elected as Alderman in 1979, the first woman ever to become a member of Township Council. Alderman Arnason was re-elected for two-year terms in 1981, in 1983, in 1985, in 1987, in 1989, and again in 1991 when became Alderman was changed to Councillor. Councillor Arnason went on to be re-elected for three year terms in 1993, in 1996, in 1999 and in 2002 - a total of 11 elections with 26 years of service to 2005 when she retired from office. Muriel was the first woman to be given the honour of “Freedom of the Municipality”.
